Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport is an airport located in the city of Pekanbaru and formerly named Airport Simpang Three. The airport has an area of 321.21 ha. In order to welcome the PON XVII in 2012, this airport can later be expanded to accommodate larger aircraft. The airport also became home-base for the Air Force 12th Air Squadron.
In 2009, Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport, airport has begun expansion of Sultan Syarif Kasim II by the Angkasa Pura II, which cooperate with the government of Riau Province. This planned expansion will be completed in late 2011 and built as a preparation for the National Sports Week to be held in 2012. Expansion is done because votes can no longer accommodate the number of passengers using the Airport via the Sultan Sharif Kasim II, which annually is increasing.
Sultan Syarif Kasim airport is located not too far from downtown Pekanbaru, which is only about 5 km. The airport is able to accommodate 3 million passengers annually. PT Angkasa Pura II is to supervise and pengoperasin of the largest airports in Riau.
